About Basil Babe
Basil Babe is a fast-casual counter service Thai family restaurant ran and operated by Eastern Michigan University alum, Haluthai, alongside her mother, Vasanna, the original owner of Siam Square in Ann Arbor. What originally started off as a pop-up, quickly grew into something neither of them could believe. With ongoing supporting from their community, Basil Babe is now officially a brick and mortar in their own hometown of Ypsilanti.
Basil Babe is a thai restaurant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It is listed at 701 W Cross St, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, which places it among the local businesses of Ypsilanti that residents and visitors turn to when they need this kind of service close by.
This group covers Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian and other Asian cuisines that are not Chinese, and the etiquette varies by kitchen. Japanese and Korean restaurants often take reservations for dinner and may add a service charge for large groups; Thai and Vietnamese spots are usually walk-in and quick-turnover. Spice levels are frequently adjustable on request at Thai, Indian and Sichuan-adjacent menus, so say if you want it mild or hot. Korean BBQ restaurants typically charge per person for all-you-can-eat service with a time limit, and grills are shared at the table. Vietnamese pho shops post bowl sizes (regular or large) and a plate of herbs, bean sprouts and lime is normal to add yourself. Card and tap-to-pay are widely accepted; cash-only is more common at small family-run counters.

Ypsilanti is in Michigan, in the Midwest, where summers are warm, winters are cold and snowy, and most errands are done by car; businesses keep steady year-round hours with the usual holiday changes. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Ypsilanti follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

As an Asian, I canβt give this place my full blessing. The food is just okay, but I literally frowned when my Thai iced tea came outβ the color was completely wrong, meaning it was just sugar milk with barely any tea. Service was not the best. I ordered takeout and I had to come back because they forgot to put any napkins or utensils. I think if youβre wanting good, authentic Thai food, just skip this area and go to Royal Oak.

I ordered the Pad Thai with pork belly and both were not good. The drunk noodles were just mid, it was medium spice but lacked flavor the noodles were overcooked the shrimp were over cooked and flavorless. I tried the Pad Thai it was the worse I have ever had. it was spiced correctly, but the noodles over cooked, the pork belly dried out so badly it was inedible. What a waste of good money.

Just got recommended from the local. We order pork belly and basil with rice, chicken pad see eew and mango sticky rice. It was so hard to find Thai restaurant with pork belly and they have it here! The price we paid is reasonable. The foods were delicious and on spot. The staff are really friendly! Got to say hi to the head chef as well! She is so lovely! She brought out the pumpkin custard for us to try and it was yummy! Definitely will be back to try the OG basil stir fried when we are back in town!

This place is truly a GEM. Their taste profile will bring you all the way to South East Asia. Their pork belly was amazing. Their coffee has a richness and depth that most restaurants don't have. Their red curry tofu dumplings are a must try as well. Their Thai hot was a pleasant one (vs. an angry one). And great job with the name.

Visited friends in the area and ordered takeout from here as Iβve gotten recommendations from others before. I was also very excited to try the restaurant bc they offer pork belly grapow, which is my favorite Thai dish thatβs not sold at most Thai restaurants Iβve been to in MI. First impression, portions are smaller than the other restaurants I go to, so pricing is somewhat higher for the value youβd get. We got: Crab Rangoons - 5/10 nothing special Sweet chili wings - 5/10, small wings, chili sauce tasted generic, nothing crazy Papaya salad - 3/10, no other flavor to the salad besides the garlic. Absent of the balanced sweet, citrusy and savory profile of a traditional Thai style papaya salad. Does come w a small bag of sticky rice, which was nice. Pork belly grapow - 2/10, I had so much hope for this dish. It seemed popular with the other reviews but left me so disappointed. The pork belly pieces were so dry, almost jerky. The whole dish tasted overly sweet and missed the savory, spicy and aromatic aspects of the dish. Pad Thai - 1/10, it was the blandest pad Thai Iβve ever gotten. Anywhere. Tasted like blanched noodles. Even with the lime squeeze. Chili jam - 1/10, didnβt
